Our Classes
Taiji Form
(Tai Chi)
86 movements in meditation. Each class involves a short warm up, walking and balance exercises, individual form practice with one-on-one instruction, and group movement. Our classes are semi-private, meaning each student has close contact with the instructor and plenty of time for corrections, discussion and personalized attention.
Our traditional Yang Family Long Form came through Sifu Paul McCaughey, who founded Toronto’s Rising Sun School of Tai Chi Chuan in 1984. Sifu’s teacher Master Lee Shiu Pak brought the tradition from Shanghai and Hong Kong to Montreal in 1960, where he had a large and dedicated following for over two decades.
Ages 14 to 114. All skill levels and abilities welcome.
Kids Taiji
An after-school sport that exercises the mind as much as the body. Tai Chi for kids weaves between high-speed exercise to slow meditations. School-age children will learn how to move well, support their physical health, feel confident in their bodies and their physical abilities, and regulate their emotions and mental focus in a variety of contexts.
Kindergarten to Grade 8. Ages 14+ can join the Tai Chi Form and Boxing classes.
Boxing
Apply the movements of the form into real life interactions. This class is dedicated to partner work, in which students run drills, learn body mechanics in relationship to another person or object moving through your space, and practice formal and freestlye sparring. Tai Chi Boxing teaches efficient, non-violent neutralization in any situation using techniques and principles for self-defense and everyday situations.
It’s not about fighting. It’s about learning how to be with others in stressful situations.
Qi Gong
Explore what it is to be aware of your body, to move and use your body in a way that supports health and wellbeing. Qigong classes at San are diverse and shifting. No two classes are the same as we explore movement and meditation in response to real-time dynamics in nature and in ourselves.
